On the occasion of the day, Dharitri Raksha Amara (Dhara) and Waterkeepers Bangladesh have organized a sit-in and sit-in program to demand an end to polythene and plastic pollution at the self-earned independence square of Dhaka University.

It is a day designated by the United Nations. The day was first celebrated in 1970 and is now celebrated worldwide by the Earth Day Network. Currently, Earth Day is celebrated every year in 193 countries.

The natural environment of the world is gradually becoming uninhabitable. US Senator Gaylord Nelson thought about this issue in the early 1960s.

He went to Washington in late 1962 to discuss the matter with Attorney General Robert Kennedy. Kennedy liked this very much.

In the month of September 1963, the issue was supposed to be discussed in the 11th State Dialogue of the then US President. But there was no fruitful discussion on this. But Nelson continued to campaign. Which later made many people aware. Finally in 1970 AD, 22nd April was fixed as the day to observe ‘Earth Day’.

The 1st Earth Day was officially celebrated in the United States on April 22 next year. It was then called Environmental Teach-In. Currently, many countries of the world are celebrating this day officially. In Northern Hemisphere countries this day is celebrated in spring and in Southern Hemisphere countries in autumn.

The United Nations placed the day in the annual calendar in 1990. Countries belonging to the United Nations are encouraged to observe it. After that the day is celebrated internationally as ‘World Earth Day’.
