The British news agency Reuters has won the Pulitzer Prize this year for showing the terrible picture of the conflict in Gaza in Palestine. The news agency has also been awarded for its investigative reporting on irregularities in various companies of US billionaire and tech entrepreneur Elon Musk. Apart from this, the influential American media Washington Post and The New York Times received three awards each.
Pulitzer Prize, one of the most important national level of the United States, is known as the “Nobel” of journalism. This award has been given since 1917. Apart from journalism, this award is given for special contribution in literature, music and drama. The award is announced annually by a board of Columbia University. This year’s Pulitzer winners were announced Monday (May 6).
This time, several Reuters photos about the Gaza conflict won the Pulitzer Prize in the ‘Breaking News Photography’ category. One of them was taken by photographer Mohammad Salem. It shows a Palestinian woman holding the body of a five-year-old child killed in Gaza. The child is a member of his family. The photo also received the prestigious ‘World Press Photo of the Year’ award this year.
In addition, Reuters received an award in the ‘National Reporting’ or ‘Report on National Affairs’ category for publishing investigative reports on Elon Musk’s various organizations. The series of reports under the title of ‘The Musk Industrial Complex’ have highlighted the various irregularities that happened in SpaceX, Neuralink and Tesla owned by Elon Musk.
Along with Reuters, The Washington Post was also selected for the award in the National Reporting category. The media published reports on the US AR-15 rifle and the role of this weapon in various gun attacks in the country. Apart from this, the Washington Post also won awards in the ‘Editorial Writing’ (Editorial) and ‘Commentary’ (Opinion) categories.
Imprisoned Russian opposition politician and Washington Post columnist Vladimir Kara-Murza was also awarded the Pulitzer. He received this award for writing some columns discussing the dangers of life from prison.
Kara-Murza is serving a 25-year sentence in Russia. The Putin administration accused him of “treason” after he said in a speech in the United States that Russia was committing “war crimes” in Ukraine. He has been in jail ever since. He received the longest sentence among critics of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The New York Times won the award in three categories: ‘Investigative Reporting’, ‘International Reporting’ and ‘Feature Writing’. They won Best in International Reporting for their coverage of the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, Israeli intelligence failures and Israeli counterattacks.
The Pulitzer Prize is considered the most prestigious public service award. This year, ProPublica, a New York-based non-profit investigative journalism organization, has won the award. And a news portal named Lookout Santa Claus got the Pulitzer in the ‘Breaking News’ category.
The Associated Press (AP) has retained the top spot in the ‘Feature Photography’ category for this year’s Pulitzer Prize for Immigrants. Journalists of The New Yorker won awards in the ‘Explanatory Reporting’ and ‘Illustrated Reporting and Commentary’ categories. And the prize in the ‘Criticism’ category was taken by The Los Angeles Times.
