Mokha Confrontation: Emergency meeting in Bagerhat, 446 shelters ready

A deep depression in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclone. According to the information from the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of a landfall in the coastal region of the country on Thursday (14th May). Due to the impact of the cyclone named ‘Moha,’ the Bay of Bengal remains rough, and a cautionary signal number 2 has been issued for the distant seaports, including Mongla and Chittagong.

The district administration has taken all necessary preparations for the cyclone ‘Moha.’ On Thursday (11th May) afternoon, a meeting of the disaster preparedness committee was held in the district administration and the nine upazilas of the district. The meeting was chaired by the District Administrator of Bagerhat, Mohammad Azizur Rahman. The higher authorities of the administration were present at the meeting. The chairmen of all Union Parishads were present at the meeting of the disaster management committee chaired by the Upazila Executive Officers in their respective upazilas.

According to the information from the district administration, in preparation for cyclone ‘Moha’ in Bagerhat, there are 84 medical teams, 1,920 members of the Civil Defense (CPD), 500 members of the Red Crescent, volunteers from organizations such as Rover, BNCC, NGOs, and medical teams with necessary medical supplies established in every union, along with 446 cyclone shelters prepared. These shelters can accommodate 2,35,975 individuals.

Additionally, 522 decimal 800 metric tons of rice and cash amounting to 10 lakh 10 thousand taka have been allocated for relief distribution. Moreover, directions have been given to the Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension, District Agriculture Officers, and Upazila Agriculture Officers to ensure minimal damage to crops due to inundation in the surrounding areas.

Instructions have been issued to the police, fire service, naval police, electricity, and coastguard to remain active in their respective roles.

The district administrator of Bagerhat, Mohammad Azizur Rahman, stated that all government officials and employees in the district have had their leaves canceled due to the cyclone ‘Moha.’ A control room has been set up in the district headquarters and each upazila. 84 medical teams have been prepared in the nine upazilas. The Red Crescent, fire service, and several hundred volunteers from non-governmental development organizations have been directed to remain prepared.

Harun, the responsible official from the Mongla Meteorological Office, stated that the deep depression formed in the Bay of Bengal is located 1,220 kilometers southwest of the Mongla Port. It has already intensified into a cyclone named ‘Moha.’ Mongla seaport has been advised to display cautionary signal number 2.
