Metrorail has gained popularity as the fastest public transport in the capital. At present passengers are plying from Uttara to Motijheel. The Uttara to Motijheel route is currently being extended from Motijheel to Kamalapur Railway Station. Now the Metrorail authorities have started the process of extending the work from Uttara Uttara Station to Tongi Railway Station.

Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited Managing Director MAN Siddique informed about the extension of metro rail to Tongi on Sunday (May 19) at Hotel Intercontinental in the capital. The length of this route from Uttara North to Tongi Railway Station will be 7.5 km. There will be 5 new stations on this route – Diabari Bazar, Sonargaon Janpad Road East, West, Tongi Bazar, Tongi Railway Station. Metrorail MD claimed that the traffic congestion along the MRT route alignment has reduced.

Earlier, Metrorail Managing Director (MD) MAN Siddique said that survey is underway to extend Metrorail from Diabari to Tongi in Uttara. Basically if Tongi railway station and road junction can be connected, the benefits of the people of that region will increase. If this route is opened, the journey from Tongi to Kamalapur will be 48 minutes.

He said that during the construction of MRT Line-6, about one kilometer of road from Diabari has been made keeping in mind the future. In the meantime, feasibility study of this extended route is underway. The tender process will start after finalizing the design quickly.

The Metrorail MD said the plan was to take the route up to Ashulia. However, due to the Dhaka-Ashulia Elevated Expressway, this new decision has been taken.
