Construction of one and a half kilometer road is going on in Kurigram by voluntary work of Charbasi | Most of the villagers of Ballaverkhas union of Nageshwari upazila of Kurigram have to fight and survive with natural calamities. Untimely floods and rain water cut off the townships here for a large part of the year.

Char Krishnapur is an area of this union. The residents of this char have to walk to the upazila city and nearby markets for any need including education-medical-business, even in the dry season they have to suffer. Apart from this, the footpath is submerged in water due to untimely floods and rains. As a result, the pace of life of the people of this area has stopped due to the lack of a high road. After many years of waiting, when their demand for a road was not met, the locals took the initiative to build the road themselves.

Residents of Char Krishnapur village said that they will need a lot of money to build such a long road. Still they have come down with what they can afford. By capitalizing on morale and labor, the villagers have already started this work of one and a half kilometer road.
It has been found that the villagers have already started the work of the road with their own labor and money. A road construction committee has been formed with locals. This committee is looking after the work with confidence. Work has been divided among the committee members at various levels. Some of the members are withdrawing money, while others are keeping account of expenses. Locals said that if the road is built, they will get multi-purpose facilities.

Local Abdul Mannan said that for a long time, about five thousand people in this area have been fighting natural disasters and surviving. There is no road in this village. They have to suffer from floods and rains for most of the year. There is no transportation system at that time. Apart from this, in the dry season, one and a half kilometers along the land lane, one has to climb the road. It is very difficult to bring and take agricultural products or daily necessities on this way. The sons and daughters of this char have fallen behind in education due to lack of communication. Despite many years of communication with the local representatives and the upper class, no arrangements have been made to construct a road here. So the villagers are getting together and building their own roads.

Yusub Ali, a heroic freedom fighter resident of Char, said, I have approached many people for the construction of the road, all of them have promised but no one has worked. So we took the initiative ourselves. We know how much we have to suffer for a road. During flood and rainy season our children cannot go to school. Can’t get emergency treatment for pregnant women. All problems will be solved if the road is built. Apart from this, the road will act as a dam during floods. Crop loss will be prevented.

One named Khokon Mia said, We have been able to unite the villagers to build the road. Everyone is helping as much as they can. Someone is working. I have made a committee for road construction. This committee is implementing road construction with confidence.

The treasurer of the committee, Abdul Khalek, said that the residents of the village gave as low as two thousand, some four thousand and some ten-twenty thousand. But this amount is very less. It is estimated that the construction of the road will cost about 30 to 40 lakhs.

Ballaverkhash Union Parishad Chairman SM Abdur Razzak said that it is not possible for the Union Parishad to allocate for the construction of the one and a half kilometer long road. So I advised the residents of Char to unite and start the work. I have personally assured cooperation.

Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram Mohammad Saidul Arif said, the people of Char Krishnapur are building a road with collective initiative, this is a commendable work. We have taken the initiative to support their work on behalf of the government. Assistance will be provided there by visiting.
