Ajay Banga, a US citizen of Indian origin, was elected as the President of the World Bank for the first time. He will take charge on June 2.

The World Bank’s Board of Governors on Wednesday (May 3) local time elected former MasterCard CEO Ajay Banga as president of the global donor agency for a five-year term.

Indian-American Ajay Banga, 63, grew up in India. He retired from MasterCard in 2021 after more than a decade at the helm. During that time, MasterCard’s profits increased dramatically. This made Bangar the most famous Indian-American executive in the United States.

Before joining MasterCard, Banga spent over a decade with Citigroup and Nestlé in India.

Ajay Banga’s father was an Army General. He grew up in different cities in India. Due to this, he said that he can adapt himself almost everywhere.

After becoming a resident of the United States, Ajay Banga is inspired to include 500 million people in the financial system worldwide through his book ‘Outside the Bank’. In 2000, when he landed in the United States, although his income was sufficient, it was difficult for him to buy a phone due to lack of credit records. At that time, he felt himself “financially excluded.” It was this feeling that inspired him to work on financial systems.

It is worth mentioning that David Malpass, the current president of the World Bank, will resign in June before his term ends in April 2024.
